Instagram Business or Creator: Which Account Is Right?

Compare who each professional account is meant for, what they share, and what to check before switching.

Choose a Business account for a company or service, and a Creator account for a public-facing individual or creative profile. Those are Instagram's intended uses for its two professional account types.

Both are professional accounts. Meta says a professional account provides access to tools for understanding growth, managing messages, creating ads, and other professional features. The account type should match who you are using the profile to represent, not a guess about which label will make a post perform better.

What is the difference between Instagram Business and Creator accounts?

Who the profile represents is the main distinction. Instagram describes Business accounts for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations, and service providers. It describes Creator accounts for public figures, content producers, artists, and influencers.

Account typeInstagram's intended audienceConsider it when
BusinessRetailers, local businesses, brands, organisations, service providersThe profile represents a company, shop, or service
CreatorPublic figures, content producers, artists, influencersThe profile represents an individual creator or public-facing personality

Instagram does not describe this as a ranking choice. Pick the type that accurately reflects the profile's role. A business owner who publishes as a public-facing creator should think about which identity the account represents and which professional features they need.

Which Instagram account type should you choose?

Start with the profile's real-world purpose. If customers visit the profile to find a business, shop, or service, Business is the straightforward fit described by Instagram. If the profile is centred on your work as an artist, influencer, or content producer, Creator fits the audience Instagram describes for that type.

  • Choose Business for a company or service profile that represents an organisation or commercial presence.
  • Choose Creator for an individual profile built around your public work, creative output, or audience.
  • Check the actual tools you need before switching. Some tools have separate eligibility requirements, so the account label alone is not a promise that every feature is available.

If you run a local company and also publish as its founder, choose based on the account's primary job. A company profile can represent the business while a separate creator profile represents an individual, if you want to keep those identities distinct. Instagram allows people to manage multiple accounts, but you do not need multiple profiles just because you are unsure which label to pick.

Quick rule: represent a business or service with Business. Represent your public creative work with Creator. Do not switch just because you expect the label alone to increase reach.

What tools do Business and Creator accounts have?

Both are professional accounts. Meta describes professional features such as the dashboard, insights, advertising tools, ways to manage messages, and access to monetisation tools when eligible.

Professional accounts can also add public contact information and a category label to the profile. Meta says you can choose whether to display the category label and contact information. Review what is visible before enabling a contact button, especially if the profile is used by an individual rather than a business.

Do not assume that every feature works for every account. Meta says monetisation tools have eligibility requirements. Availability can also depend on the specific feature and account. Check the relevant in-app setting or Meta Help page for the tool you want to use.

Instagram's professional accounts guide lists the shared professional features and the limits that come with switching.

Will a professional Instagram account be private?

No, professional accounts cannot be private. If your personal account is private, switching it to a professional account makes it public. Meta also says pending follow requests are automatically accepted when the account goes public.

Check this before changing a private personal profile, particularly if you use it for friends and family. Decide whether you are comfortable with a public account and review pending requests first. Do not switch until you are ready for that change.

Meta's setup guide for Business and Creator accounts explains this privacy change and the setup flow.

How do you switch between Business and Creator?

You can change your professional account type in Instagram's account settings. In the app, Meta's current instructions are:

  1. Go to your profile and open Settings and activity.
  2. Under For professionals, tap Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Account type, then Switch account type.
  4. Choose Business or Creator and tap Switch.

Menu wording or placement can change. If you do not see the same labels, use Instagram's current instructions for setting up or changing a professional account.

Meta says you can switch between professional account types or return to a personal account. Switching from professional to personal is not consequence-free: Meta notes that you may lose access to ads and some tools, and a connected Facebook Page will be disconnected.

Does the Instagram category determine whether you have a Business or Creator account?

No. Instagram says the category you select does not determine the account type. The category describes what you do. You separately choose Business or Creator during the professional account setup.

Pick the category that best describes your work, then select the account type that matches the profile's role. You can also choose whether to display the category label on your public profile, according to Meta's setup instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Creator account a professional account?

Yes. Instagram's professional accounts can be set to Business or Creator.

Is Business better than Creator for reach?

Instagram describes the account types by who they are for, not as a reach ranking. Choose the type that fits the profile.

Can a Business account be private?

No. Instagram says professional accounts cannot be private.

Will switching a private personal account make it public?

Yes. Meta says switching a private personal account to professional makes it public and automatically accepts pending follow requests.

Does the category I choose decide whether I have Business or Creator?

No. Meta says category selection and account type are separate choices.

Can I change the account type later?

Meta says you can change between professional account types. Switching back to personal can remove access to ads and some tools and disconnect a linked Facebook Page.

Bottom line: choose Business for a profile representing a company or service, and Creator for a profile representing your public creative work. Before switching, check the privacy change and the tools you rely on.
